* MacMillan is the 2006 Thieme IUPAC Prize awardee
Thieme Publishers and IUPAC in collaboration with the editors of SYNTHESIS, SYNLETT, Science of Synthesis, and Houben –Weyl are pleased to announce that the 2006 Thieme IUPAC Prize awardee is David W.C. MacMillan of the California Institute of Technology. The Prize, consisting of 5000 Euros, is awarded every two years on the occasion of the IUPAC International Conference on Organic Synthesis (ICOS) to a scientist under 40 years of age whose research has had a major impact on the field of synthetic organic chemistry. The Prize will be presented to David MacMillan at his Award Lecture on June 13, 2006, at the ICOS-16 Conference in Meida, Mexico.

* Hosting ICCE in 2010
The International Conference on Chemical Education (ICCE) is a biennial event planned by the IUPAC Committee on Chemistry Education (CCE). The 19th conference in the series will be held 12-17 August 2006, in Seoul, Korea. CCE now invites possible hosts for the 2010 conference. A letter expressing interest should be sent to Peter G. Mahaffy, CCE chairman.

* Safety Training Program - Call for Applicants
Making the world a bit safer, safety experts from developing countries have an opportunity to visit and work in plants of IUPAC Company Associates in the industrialized world for a training period of one to three weeks.
Applications are now invited for placement in the 2006 program.

* Capabilities of Computational Methods
In a Special Topic Article, Bernd M. Rode and Thomas S. Hofer review how to access structure and dynamics of solutions. The progress of computational chemistry in the treatment of liquid systems is outlined, and the combination of the statistical methods (Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics) with quantum mechanics as the main foundation of this progress is emphasized.

* Organometallics in Organic Synthesis
The past 25 years have witnessed some quite extraordinary advances in the development and synthetic application of organometallic reagents and catalysts. In 2001, Sharpless, Noyori, and Knowles received the Nobel Prize for their work in this area of chemistry; and the high profile has been maintained by the award of the 2005 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Chauvin, Grubbs, and Schrock for the development of the metathesis method in organic synthesis. These advances are also reflected in the history of the conference series Organometallic Chemistry Directed Towards Organic Synthesis (OMCOS), which has established itself as a popular and enduring international forum for presentation and discussion of mainstream developments and opportunities in this field.
This Special Topic Issue of PAC includes reviews and research papers based on lectures presented at the 13th IUPAC International Symposium on Organometallic Chemistry Directed Towards Organic Synthesis (OMCOS-13), Geneva, Switzerland, 17-21 July 2005; Foreward, J.R. Bull (PAC Scientific Editor); Preface, A. Alexakis and E.P. Kündig (OMCOS-13 co-chairs).

* Trace Elements in Food
Trace elements may have different functions in human and animal metabolism: some are toxic (e.g., Hg), others are essential to maintain good health (e.g., Ca), or they can be essential but also toxic, depending on the concentration in the body or in parts thereof (e.g., Se). The importance of various aspects of trace elements in relation to food is steadily increasing in the perception of the consumer and the respective authorities: food contaminants, essential and toxic elements, bioavailability and speciation, nutritional value and fortified food, reliable measurement of contents, etc. In addition, through the many minor and major food-related incidents during recent years the consumer is becoming more concerned about the quality and safety of food. As a result, research and development efforts in this area have also been increased and/or been redirected.
This PAC issue includes presentation made at the 2nd IUPAC Symposium on Trace Elements in Food (TEF-2), covering a wide range of issues, from trace element bioavailability, toxicological and nutritional aspects of trace elements, to trace elements in fortified foods and in food supplements, discussed from both a speciation and a legislation point of view.
