* The XML Gold Book Online

The IUPAC Gold Book —the Compendium of Chemical Terminology— is now
available in an all-new format. The new version takes full advantage of
new technologies based on eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and provides
efficient ways of browsing, searching, and simply using this reference.

* Author Archiving Policy for IUPAC
Recenlty, the Bureau approved a policy that addresses the issue of the
deposit of IUPAC copyrighted material in institutional archives.

* IUPAC Elections for 2008-09 Term
Every two years, IUPAC elects new officers and committee members. About
120 individuals are to be elected or reelected either as Titular
Members, Associate Members, or National Representatives. Information
concerning the voting process and the role of each kind of member is
contained in the Union bylaws.

* Novel Materials and their Synthesis
State-of-the-art synthesis and preparation of novel materials and
discussions of their performance and applications potential made up the
breadth of these themes presented at the 1st International Symposium on
Novel Materials and their Synthesis (NMS-1). Held jointly with the 15th
International Symposium on Fine Chemistry and Functional Polymers
(FCFP-XV), this event was organized in Shanghai on 17-20 October 2005 by
Fudan University to celebrate its Centennial Anniversary. Papers
selected from the invited presentations have been assembled into an
issue of PAC.

* Green/Sustainable Chemistry
Clean, eco-friendly, and less wasteful manufacturing processes for
sustainable development are increasingly being realized. A collection of
papers based upon a selection of lectures from the Second International
Symposium on Green/Sustainable Chemistry, in Delhi on 10-13 January
2006, have been published. This publication -like the Symposium- attests
to the growing recognition that government, industry, and the academic
sector need to cooperate closely, in order to achieve and promote the
cause of green chemistry and its beneficial consequences throughout the
world. The challenge for the chemistry community is to recognize the
need and pursue research that engages environmentally friendly
challenges and outcomes.

* History and Effectiveness of CHEMRAWN Conferences, 1978-2006
The 28-year history of CHEMRAWN has produced 14 full-fledged
conferences. The meetings have varied in subject, location, size, and
budget, but they have all addressed a single goal-to catalyze the use of
chemistry and related sciences and engineering to meet world needs. This
article summarizes those conferences to form an understanding of how the
CHEMRAWN process has fostered new ideas and supported solutions to world
by John Malin, current CHEMRAWN Chairman

* IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists - 2007 Solicitation
The IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists has been established to encourage
outstanding young research scientists at the beginning of their careers.
The prize will be given for the most outstanding Ph.D. thesis in the
general area of the chemical sciences, as described in a 1000-word essay.
Deadline: 1 February 2007 - for entrants that receive their Ph.D. (or
equivalent) degree during the calendar year 2006.
