* Chemical Thermodynamics
Chemical thermodynamics continued to make very significant contributions
to the rapidly developing interdisciplinary fields such as the life
sciences, new materials, medicine and pharmacy, new energy resources,
the environment, separation technologies, agriculture, green chemistry,
and so on. These are all extremely important issues for scientists
worldwide, and particularly for those who are in developing or
economically disadvantaged countries.
The relevance of chemical thermodynamics was again proven during the
19th International Conference on Chemical Thermodynamics (ICCT-19) which
took place as part of THERMO International 2006, together with the 16th
Symposium on Thermophysical Properties and the 61st Calorimetry
Conference, from 30 July to 4 August 2006 at the University of Colorado,
Boulder, CO, USA. The papers published in the July 2007 issue of PAC
demonstrate Thermodynamics continues to be an important area of research
and with a wide range of applications from chemical engineering to the
biosciences. Conference Editor: John H. Dymond

* Should've
The new play by Roald Hoffmann is about ethics in science and art. It
will be staged during the opening ceremony of the IUPAC Congress in
Torino, on Sunday, 5 August 2007.
For an interview with Hoffmann, see CI May 2007, pp. 4-7
Of relevance to this subject, see also Ivan Amato' s article entitled
'Experiments Of Concern - Well-intentioned research, in the wrong hands,
can become dangerous', C&EN 30 Jul 2007, vol 85, no 31, pp. 51-55

* Multiple Uses of Chemicals
A website providing resource materials to help teachers and students
understand the multiple uses of chemicals, learn about the Chemical
Weapons Convention, and develop codes of conduct to prevent harmful uses
is being developed as part of IUPAC project 2005-029-1-050.
A workshop on the same topics is scheduled as part of the Congress in
Torino, on 6 Aug 2007 at 10:30am.
For more details and web access, see

* Organic Chemistry in Asia

A Workshop under Strategic Planning for a new East Asian Network for
Organic Chemistry was held in Naha, Okinawa, Japan on 16 October 2006
and coordinated as part of the 1st International Conference on
Cutting-Edge Organic Chemistry in Asia. For a report on the 1st
International Conference on Cutting-Edge Organic Chemistry in Asia, see
Chem. Asian J. 2007, 2 , pp. 452-454.

* Teamwork
The 13th issue of 'TEAMWORK', the Newsletter for the IUPAC Analytical
Chemistry Division has been released. Presently edited by Ales Fajgelj,
the newsletter is designed to keep members informed about Division
activities and about significant new opportunities or policy
developments within IUPAC.

* CEFIC calls for Grant Applications
In the context of its Long-Range Research Initiative (LRI) programme,
the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) is requesting grant
applications from research groups in the following areas: Toxicogenomics
and male reproductive health, Human biomonitoring, Population dynamics
modelling, Evaluation of endocrine effects in aquatic organisms,
Environmental fate of chemicals, and Bioconcentration, bioaccumulation,
biotransformation. Deadline for submission is 14 September 2007.

* Metrological Traceability

A formal presentation of the project report on ‘Metrological
Traceability of Measurement Results in Chemistry’ will take place at the

for all areas of chemistry which include measurement results and
therefore you are cordially invited to attend the presentation. More
information about the project can be found at:

* The Evolving Identity of Chemistry
A conference titled 'Neighbours and Territories: The Evolving Identity
of Chemistry' will take place in Leuven (Belgium) from 28 August to 1

chemistry and the changing relationships with other fields. A major aim
of the conferences is to facilitate communication between historically
interested chemists and historians of chemistry from all over Europe.
