Committee on Teaching Chemistry

Number: 025/44/91

Title: Source Books for Teaching of Chemistry

Coordinator(s): K.V. Sane, R.B. Bucat and J.J. Lagowski

Objective:
Chemistry educators frequently lack the funds to acquire the books they need to support their teaching. In this situation the quality of their curricula is mediocre and gradually deteriorates with time. There is a need for a low-cost source of books and reviews of proven value therefore, especially in developing countries. By locating and distributing such publications, CTC can make a substantial contribution to the quality of chemistry teaching internationaly.

Progress:
As an extension of the UNESCO/CTC Project on Local ly Produced Low Cost Equipment, a trial attempt has been going on since 1991 for publishing a series of Low-Cost Resource Books in Chemistry for the benefit of teachers and students. It has been found that significant reduction in cost is possible by coupling the use of Desk Top Publishing (DTP) approach with a social objective like training needy individuals - particularly destitute women - for self-employment.
The list of publications produced to date under this programme is given below:
