Chemistry and Human Health Division (VII)

COMMISSION ON TOXICOLOGY (VII.C.2)

Number: 720/8/95

Title: Risk Assessment; Educational Material

Coordinator(s): J.H. Duffus, R. F. Herber, E. Olsen and J. M. Christensen

Completion Date: 2001 - project completed

Objective:
Risk assessment for processes using chemicals is now mandatory in many countries. It is required for decision making about such processes at all levels from bench chemistry up to international regulation. However, although much has been written about it, there is still no broad agreement on best practice. In particular, the interface with toxicology has not always had a sound scientific base. This topic is being addressed at the forthcoming ComTox Seminar in Luxembourg in October (1999?). In the light of the conclusions and recommendations from this, and their own expertise, the group will identify the areas of risk assessment which ComTox may address effectively and define achievable projects in this area.

Dr. John H. Duffus is also the author of a summary entitled 'Risk Assessment Terminology' that presents the main points of a report of the work of a joint International Program on Chemical Safety/Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (IPCS/OECD) Working Party. > See Chem. Int. Vol. 23, No. 2, 2001.

Essential toxicology - an educational resource
This compilation of presentations has been prepared by John Duffus and Howard Worth; it is intended to provide educators with a resource of materials for teaching and learning the fundamentals of toxicology. > View webversion
