Completion Date: 2004 - project completed
Objective:
A number of devices based upon oscillations of quartz crystals that
are exceedingly sensitive to small mass changes have been reported.
The general principle is the generation of crystal oscillations by local
electric fields applied to crystal surfaces. The exact embodiment depends
on the crystal "cut" and the placement of electrodes; a well known example
is the quartz crystal microbalance. This is a nomenclature and classification
document. There is a recognised universal need to describe and compare
the many devices based on quartz and organize the theoretical differences,
oscillation equations, relations with mass loading and fundamental mechanical
parameters of quartz.
