Title: Education in Chemistry
and Industry

Remarks: Interaction with COCI,
regional and national chemical industry associations
Completion Date:
Objective:
The importance of industry involvement in IUPAC affairs is increasingly
recognised. Also outside IUPAC links between industry and education
have strengthened and diversified. The potential benefits of cooperation
are generally accepted but few know how to realise them in their
own contexts. The nature of chemical industry varies from region
to region. Similarly educational needs vary regionally. Awareness
of the role of the chemical and allied industry in sustainable development
needs to be widely disseminated in developing countries and linked
with entrepreneurial and career information. Industry-education
initiatives are rather well developed in a few countries and CTC
can help disseminate the experiences gained in these to other countries.
This is to be done in cooperation with COCI and regional and national
chemical industry associations. Regional workshops and conferences
with both local and international participation will be organised.
In this way a more favourable international public attitude toward
chemical industry may be developed.
Progress:
The Second International Conference on Industry-Education Initiatives
in Chemistry was held in Sao Paulo in December 1997.
