Title: "Global Climate Change" - Translation and Dissemination of a monograph for Secondary Schools

  • To translate a monograph on "Global Climate Change", from Italian into English, Spanish and Portuguese.
  • To provide a total of 2000 copies of this monograph, translated into these three languages, for initial dissemination and evaluation by relevant secondary school authorities, professional science teaching bodies and secondary teachers in Australia, Spain, Portugal and other selected countries.
  • To demonstrate the central role of chemistry in the treatment of issues of global importance and particularly the contribution that green chemistry can make.
  • To determine the future potential demand for this monograph in secondary schools.

A monograph on "Global Climate Change" written in Italian, has been produced by the Italian Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale "La Chimica per L'Ambiente" (INCA; ISBN: 88-88214-12-7; OP2) and distributed to Italian secondary schools. It is freely downloadable from <www.incaweb.org/publications/papers.php> (under other publications).

This monograph or booklet, constitutes one of the early chapters from a senior secondary textbook on "Introduction to Green Chemistry" which will be produced by INCA as part of its Green Chemistry Series. The monograph is gaining considerable popularity in Italy, leading to its adoption by many science teachers as a resource for the curriculum. The booklet also has the unique feature of introducing green chemistry to secondary school students. It stresses the central role of chemistry in understanding the Global Climate Change issue.

This booklet can serve as a significant and popular resource for secondary schools in other parts of the world; however, it needs to be reproduced in other languages. In the first instance, it is proposed to translate the booklet into English, Portuguese and Spanish. This will allow a significant number of countries to be covered, including parts of Europe, the UK, Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, as well as most of the countries in the North and South American continents.

In the original version, Section 5.3 'perspectives' is dedicated to the Kyoto protocol and the European/Italian reality. In the translations this section will be updated and customized to fit to the macro-local reality of each user country (e.g. the Kyoto protocol and Australia for the English version (or South America for the Portuguese/Spanish ones).

These booklets will be promoted and distributed to secondary science curriculum authorities, science education consultants and secondary teachers through the relevant bodies in target countries. As members of IUPAC, the National Chemical Associations will act as main distributors of the booklet in their respective countries. The initial target countries will be Australia, Spain and Portugal, however, the UK, USA, Canada, South Africa, Brazil and Argentina will also be targeted. The task group members will utilize the national professional organisations, as well as personal contacts in these countries to initiate the initial dissemination process. Presentations will also be given at relevant conferences and to science teacher groups.IUPAC support is requested to produce the initial 2000 booklets translated into the three languages and to disseminate these booklets from the initial print run, at no charge to recipients. If this project is successful through the generation of future demand for the booklet, production costs will be met by a cost recovery pricing structure.

April 2007 update - Translation in English, Spanish and Portuguese are in good progress, and plans are to release these publications in time at the GA/Congres in Torino, in Aug 2007.

Project completed - The translations (OP2 a, b and c) have been published by INCA in July 2007, and are available online @ <www.incaweb.org/publications/papers.php>
