Biphasic sonoelectrosynthesis. A review*

Jay D. Wadhawan, Frank Marken§, and Richard G. Compton

Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory, Oxford University, South Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3QZ, UK

Abstract: Electrosynthesis can be carried out in emulsions formed in situ via sonication of otherwise immiscible liquid/liquid systems. The basic physical principles underlying these experiments are introduced and illustrated via three examples: the electroreduction of liquid olefins, the Kolbe electrooxidation, and the electrogeneration of leuco-methylene green.

* An issue of reviews and research papers based on presentations made at the IUPAC/ICSU Workshop on Electrochemistry and Interfacial Chemistry in Environmental Clean-up and Green Chemical Processes, Coimbra, Portugal, 6-7 April, 2001.
