Preface*
It was a great honor and personal privilege for me to organize the
3rd IUPAC International Conference on Biodiversity (ICOB-3) in Antalya,
Turkey during 3-8 November 2001, despite the adverse circumstances in
the world after the tragic events of September 11th in the United States.
We were delighted to welcome the distinguished gathering of scientists
from 40 countries to Antalya for the ICOB-3. Thank you very much for
attending and delivering excellent lectures and posters.
This conference was part of a series of IUPAC-sponsored international
conferences that are held every two years, and initiated by the Organic
and Biomolecular Chemistry Division. The aim of this series of conferences
is to understand the value of biological resources and the need for
their conservation in terms of the biomolecular chemistry of naturally
occurring molecular systems. The special properties of biomolecules
and their sustainable utilization have been discussed among molecularly
oriented scientists from universities, government institutions, and
industrial organizations from different regions. The development of
pharmaceutical, agricultural, and industrial products from bioresources
can be used to promote incentives for conservation by providing an economic
return to sustainable use of those sources. Therefore, ICOB-3 was an
excellent occasion for a rich scientific diversity and cultural exchange.
The many scientists who represent institutions from five continents
generated novel and fruitful ideas to accelerate the future researches
and valuable guidelines regarding development of activities for sustainable
utilization of biodiversity and conservation of the environment for
welfare of humans and other living organisms.
The conference program included plenary and invited lectures and poster
presentations.
The ICOB-3 session topics were: Chemical Basis of Biodiversity, Biomolecular
Aspects of Biodiversity and Innovative Utilization. In addition, a panel
was organized as a discussion forum on International Cooperation on
Molecular Biodiversity.
The manuscripts of six plenary lectures are published in this issue
of PAC. The conference proceedings are being published by Kluwer
Academic/Plenum Publishers as Biodiversity: Biomolecular Aspects
of Biodiversity and Innovative Utilization.
